Carnival of Chemistry, October 29, 2006
Several CEBC graduate students performed demonstrations with dry ice at this year’s Carnival of Chemistry. This is the 13th year for the three-time, National award-winning
KU Carnival of Chemistry. The goal of the carnival is to provide safe, fun, hands-on science experiences
for approximately 500 elementary students and their parents.
CEBC activities included extinguishing flames with carbon dioxide vapor, blowing up balloons with dry ice, making giant bubbles with carbon dioxide vapor, and watching dry ice sublimate.
We chose hands-on carbon dioxide activities to help the public understand the phase changing properties of this molecule and the usefulness of liquid carbon dioxide as an environmentally beneficial solvent.
